Thanks Everyone!

The Spring camp out was a blast -- thanks to everyone who pitched-in to make it a success. But a special thanks to Raidah for locating The Clearing for us and to both Raidah and Gay for the pancake breakfast!

And a reminder to everyone that in June, we'll be handing out advancement awards (so you still have time to finish) at our first Pack Fishing Derby.

More details on this will be heading your way, but the tentative plan is to meet at Innsbrook on a Saturday morning (early -- before the heat sets in) and let the boys fish to their heart's content.

And remember, kids under 16 don't need a license, but adults who wish to cast a line do (here's a fee schedule from the DGIF).
And...we'll be camping as a Pack again in the Fall, not only because it's fun, but also because it's a great way to introduce our new scouts to the outdoors.

Spring Campout

There's nothing like Spring camping, and this year, thanks to the efforts of our Camping Coordinator, Raidah Hudson Lee, we're in for a real treat.

The Pack will be heading to The Clearing, in Amelia county for an overnighter on May 30th.

There are 18 medium size tent sites and 24 bunks in a large co-ed cabin. There is also plenty of open field space for super size family tents.

To reserve your spot, email Raidah Hudson Lee at raidah[at]comcast[dot]net with the number of people in your party. We are being charged by "family group" and Pack 799 will be picking up the tab. The deadline for reservations is May 20th.

Campers will arrive on the morning of the 30th and set up camp, or pitch their gear in the cabin. Activities start just after noon.

As in past years, each Den is responsible for bringing its own food and drinks for Saturday lunch and dinner. There is clean, drinkable water on site. There is also a kitchen lodge (with refrigerator and bathrooms) that parents will have limited access to. There are no fire rings at the tent sites, so bring your camp stoves. There will be a large campfire in the evening for roasting hot dogs and making s'mores and other night-time snacks. There is also a pavilion with a big fireplace that we can use on site.

Make sure to bring trash bags, as we'll have to take our garbage with us. That's also an incentive to use materials you can wash or reuse, as opposed to throwing away.

Pack 799 will provide a pancake and cereal breakfast on Sunday morning, the 31st. We will have plenty of coffee, milk and juice available. If you would like to volunteer to help prepare the breakfast at the event, please let Raidah know.

Bring an extra change of clothes as there is a creek nearby.

Siblings and other family members are welcome to attend -- and encouraged to do so as we will also be staging our graduation/advancement ceremony on Saturday night around the big campfire.

Lastly, pay attention to the directions carefully. Road signs are tough to read. The Route 360 option is more straightforward.

March Pack Meeting

The next pack meeting is March 24th at 7 PM in Trinity Hall. It's Skit Night, so prepare to be amazed as the boys test out their acting chops. And remember to bring your cameras!

Dino's Den 4 is our host for the evening.

If you're scrambling for a last-minute resource on skits, here's a great resource.

Blue & Gold Banquet

The Pack's annual Blue & Gold Banquet will be held on February 10 in Trinity Hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the festivities begin at 6.

This is a big event for our Webelos II scouts, as they say goodbye to Cub Scouting and move on to new adventures in Boy Scouts or other activities. There will be an Arrow of Light ceremony for those boys who have earned the award, and then cross-over. During dinner, we will present awards to boys from the other Dens recognizing their advancement and achievements.

Tim Goodman will also make a Friends of Scouting presentation, and I urge you to consider making a contribution -- regardless of the amount -- in support of this effort.

And since it is a banquet, what's on the menu?

Fried chicken and barbecue, rolls, beans, drinks and cookies.

Mmmmmm.

Cost is $5.00 per person and TICKETS ARE REQUIRED. If you haven't purchased your tickets yet, are still available prior to the event from Meg or Ted Bryant at 285-0011, ted.bryant[at]comcast.net or Kristen Neri at 282-2361. Please pay in cash or with a check made out to Pack 799.

And don't forget -- next month's Pack meeting is Skit Night...so start practicing your lines and hitting your marks now!

Pinewood Derby

The world-famous Pinewood Derby is Saturday the 17th in Eaton Hall at Trinity UMC. This is a change in venue from past years as Upward Basketball will be using Trinity Hall for its games on the same time (which may of you already know).

Here's the schedule:

10:15 a.m. Doors Open
10:30 a.m. Tiger & Wolf Registration
11:00 a.m. Tiger & Wolf Races
11:30 a.m. Concessions Open
12:00 p.m. Tiger & Wolf Awards
12:30 p.m. Bear & Webelos Registration
1:00 p.m. Bear & Webelos Races
2:00 p.m. Bear & Webelos Awards
2:30 p.m. Doors Close

We'll have snack available around 11:30 for all participants -- $1 buys you a slice of pizza and a drink, so you can feed the boys and stay for the races.

This will also be your chance to purchase tickets February 10th's Blue & Gold Banquet, where we will say farewell to our Webelos II scouts as they crossover into Boy Scout Troops. Tickets for the banquet are $5, which helps defray the cost of the event (because it is a banquet, after all, and that means dinner!).

And, if you wish, you may make your Friends of Scouting contribution at the same time. For those who don't know what Friends of scouting is, here's a link to the brochure that has more information. In a nutshell, FOS is the Council's annual fund campaign, and your tax-deductible contribution helps support the camp facilities and programs, training and much more that helps make our Pack, and scouting in Central VA, possible.

Hope to see you all Saturday!

2008 Quality Unit Award

Pack 799 will receive a "Quality Unit Award" for 2008 from the Heart of Virginia Council. This continues our long winning streak and is a testament to the dedication of every member of the Pack to keep our boys active and involved in scouting. Congratulations to everyone (including you!) for making this possible.

Oh yeah...and it means the boys and leaders will get a new shoulder patch, too!

December Pack Meeting

Our next Pack meeting will be Tuesday December 16th at 7 PM in Trinity Hall. For this event, we'll be joined by the folks from Riverside Outfitters, who will share with us some of what they do, and what sort of fun and adventures the boys can have along the James -- be it in the water, the trees, the rocks or wherever their hearts (and skills) take them. We may get a couple of demonstrations, too...so bring your questions and if you can, practice your knots!

I know a lot of 1st grade Tuckahoe parents have a conflict with the play that night. Not to worry -- and here's hoping your son "breaks a leg"!

And remember -- if you haven't paid your dues yet, please do so as soon as possible!

See you on the 16th.
